Reconstruction and Redevelopment of the 47 years-old Ariaria International Market begins September 2021. This is contained in a statement released recently by the Abia State Government.
The phased reconstruction is targeted to achieve the following:
◊ Remediation of identified structural defects in the market
◊ Provision of requisite modern infrastructure in the market
◊ Drainage channels to eliminate the perennial flooding in the market
◊ Reconstruction of the internal roads within the market
◊ Creation of functional car parks and conveniences
◊ Beautification of the surrounding environment
◊ Upgrade the capacity of the Police and Fire Service Stations
◊ Installation of modern market facilities and amenities
◊ Construction of new shops and parks in the market
The redevelopment project will be executed in phases so as to ensure minimal disruptions to trading activities while it lasts. In other words, the whole market will not be shut down altogether; rather different parts of the market will be relocated and reconstructed one after another.
The first phase of the reconstruction which focuses on A-Line, C-Line and Medical Line is expected to be completed by December 2021.
