Following impressive improvements in road infrastructure, security and waste management, Abia State has continued to witness a sustained surge in the population of business persons visiting the state, especially the major urban centres of Aba and Umuahia.
This development is a pointer to the need for urgent and massive investment in the hospitality sector. With an International Airport at Nsulu, and a Five Star Hotel at Aba, Abia State is sure to consolidate its position as the foremost industrial, commercial and hospitality hub of South-East Nigeria.
The Abia State Government recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Radisson Blu, an international hotel brand managed and operated by Radisson Hotels, for the re-construction and expansion of the moribund Enyimba Hotels Aba, as well as the construction of an International Conference Centre, and an Exhibition Centre.
The project is expected to be a hospitality masterpiece that will include a world-class Five-Star Hotel and Events Facility, a 2,500 Seats Main Hall, multiple mini-halls, and a large space for exhibitions. The expected delivery timeline is 24 months. Radisson Blu is a globally respected hospitality brand.
Present at the epoch marking event which took place at the Radisson Blu headquarters in Lagos, were the Honourable Attorney General of Abia state, Mr. Ikechukwu Uwanna and the DG of Greater Aba Development Authority (GADA), Architect Uche Ukeje, representing the Abia State Government.
This undertaking marks a major turning point in the effort of the Abia State government to revamp moribund industries and institutions in the state; a move that continues to generate applause and commendations from Abia Citizens.
Construction of the Enyimba Hotels at Aba was started over forty years ago by the first elected Governor of old Imo State, Chief Sam Onunaka Mbakwe. The project was however abandoned midway following a military overthrow of the then democratically elected government in power. Sadly, successive military and democratic administrations did not deem it necessary to reclaim, revamp and complete the iconic landmark project.
The state government’s determination to salvage and put the Sam Mbakwe (past Governor of old Imo State) vision back on track was demonstrated in the huge personal effort made by Dr. Alex Otti to resolve all legal and contractual bottlenecks that threatened to derail the project actualization.
The New Enyimba Hotels, sitting on the banks of the Aba River, will be a Five-Star Hotel masterpiece, having all the features that would make it a beauty to behold and a choice destination for the people, business executives and tourists.
This epoch making development underscores the present government’s determination to turnaround Abia state from the near slum-status it wore over the years, to a model state with the requisite infrastructure, beauty, business and economic ambience that make investors, visitors, business persons, and inhabitants to not only feel safe, but also become more productive, comfortable and happy.
