Now that you have arrived at your target market, how do you proceed and strategize to ensure you secure great prices for the best qualities? How do you ensure that you are not ripped-off?

If you are new to this market and don’t really know where to find what you want to buy, do well not to show it. Instead approach a mature and decent person in a shop and gently ask for directions. Do well to avoid those market hangers-on (“nde-osoo-ahia”) who approach you telling you they have what you want, even before they ask you what you want!

You may even do an online search at Aba BUSINESS Directory before visiting the physical shops.

Just remember that the average aba trader is a local psychologist. He or she will appraise you to know if you are a new or old buyer of the product. He or she will appraise you to know if you are a “ready-to-buy” or just “price-shopping” customer. He or she will appraise you to know if you are an Aba person or a “foreigner”. All these will likely influence how he or she deals with you. So do well to protect your “identity” and keep him or her guessing.

Now that you have found what you want to buy, how do you negotiate a decent price? Firstly, even if you are overly excited to have found exactly what you want, do not show it. Keep looking at other items in that particular shop, and even in other shops around as if you want to go there! Then ask for the prices of a few identical items (by pointing, touching or picking-up) including the exact one you are interested in. This will give you an idea of the price range.

If you have done some market research before coming, you’ll probably know if the prices are fair or padded. In that case you’ll easily agree on a purchase price based on the fact that you already know what you want and how much it goes for.

If you don’t have an idea of how much the item is sold for, then start by reacting in such a manner to show that the prices are too high for you. At this point, he or she may review the prices down and ask you how much you want to pay. Then pleadingly offer to pay about a third or half of the price, and watch his or her reaction. Before you do this however, please make sure it is appropriate so to do. Be careful not to belittle yourself or cause tempers to rise. Use this strategy with caution!

Depending on how it goes, after a little friendly haggling, you will then gently request him or her to give you the last price so as to enable you make up your mind whether to buy or not. Then go ahead and buy, if you are happy and satisfied with the deal. But never forget your non-negotiable power to walk away, if you’re not happy and satisfied. Welcome to Aba Markets!
